Job summary

The individual will lead a multiple team-based structure of senior leaders, fellows and associates. The VP will work closely, on a peer foundation, with other senior policy staff, specifically the COO and other Members of the Senior leadership Team. The VP reports directly to the COO.

Job description

The EastWest Institute (EWI) is a fiercely independent international policy organization founded in 1980 to help prevent conflict and promote international cooperation in solving seemingly intractable peace and security issues. EWI is known for its record of accomplishments, action bias and results-driven mandate, as well as for its commitment to facilitating dialogue between emerging and developed nations.


The Vice-President is accountable for the strategic, conceptual and operational success of EWI’s approved programmatic goals and objectives and their alignment with the strategic mission of the Institute. The individual will lead a multiple team-based structure of senior leaders, fellows and associates. The VP will work closely, on a peer foundation, with other senior policy staff, specifically the COO and other Members of the Senior leadership Team.  The VP reports directly to the COO.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the programmatic work of the Pillar.
  • Ensure effective management of EWI approved initiatives, fund-raising and outreach efforts to maximize a high-impact performance.
  • Ensure alignment with the Policy Innovation and Communication Group and the Operations areas of the Institute.
  • Develop active outreach activities, including those targeted at the EWI network.
  • Actively promote engagement by EWI’s Board of Directors in EWI’s programmatic activities.
  • Develop and manage subordinate staff.
  • Represents EWI at external meetings, conferences, media opportunities and other high-level events.
  • Participate in the formulation of EWI’s strategies.
  • Maintain high-level relationships with public, private and NGO officials.
  • Mentor and provide support to middle and junior level staff.
  • Ensure compliance with EWI policies and procedures, quality control, monitoring and evaluation processes.
  • Travel extensively in regions of EWI’s strategic operations (minimum 50% of working time)
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Job qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in a related field or equivalent professional experience with MA. Minimum of 15 – 20 years professional experience with at least 7 years in policy lead role.
  • Proven strong leadership skills gained at a senior level in a complex international organization.
